How this site was made
These are the checks we run on our own site, with the numbers.
What we measured first
On 6 October 2026 we measured five sites, two design studios, a product page, a digital agency and a software company, at 1440 pixels wide, on four things: how many text sizes the home page uses, how large the largest heading is, how far down the first large image sits, and how many things are moving when nothing is touched. We measured our own home page the same way that day, and again on 7 October.
| Site | Text sizes | Largest heading | First large image | Moving at rest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pentagram | 6 | 52px | 60px down | 0 |
| Collins | 6 | 72px | below the opening statement | 1 |
| Apple, iPhone page | 8 | 80px | 481px down | 10 |
| Instrument | 11 | 64px | below the opening statement | 1 |
| Linear | 13 | 72px | 490px down | 85 |
| This site, 6 October | 13 | 144px | about 2,670px down | 42 |
| This site, now | 7 | 144px | about 1,100px down | 11 |
We kept one thing on purpose. Our home headline is larger than any of theirs, and it is the one loud thing on the page. Everything under it is quieter and more regular.
Seven sizes of type
The whole site is set in seven sizes of type. The two smallest never change, and the other five scale down on a phone.
| Used for | At 1440 wide | At 390 wide |
|---|---|---|
| Labels, captions, the footer, form help and small print | 15px | 15px |
| Running text | 18px | 18px |
| Lead paragraphs | 21px | 20px |
| Sub-headings | 28px | 24px |
| Section headings | 56px | 32px |
| Page headings | 76px | 44px |
| The home headline | 144px | 66px |
We use two typefaces. Bodoni Moda sets the headings, because its high-contrast forms match our wordmark. Public Sans sets everything else.
A typical line of running text holds 73 characters on a wide screen. Quotation marks and apostrophes are the typographic ones.
Three distances
Section spacing takes one of three distances: 72, 96 or 128 pixels above and below the content on a wide screen, and 40, 56 or 72 on a phone. A tablet uses 56, 72 or 96. Only the opening of the home page and two short joining sections are exceptions. A page with three distances reads as one page.
What moves
At rest, nothing moves except the small galleries of screenshots on the home page. They change screen every 4.6 seconds while they are in view, and they stop when you press Pause, or when your pointer or keyboard focus is on them.
Eight section headings on the home page rise 18 pixels and fade in once, as they come into view, and the three galleries rise in the same way. On screens 900 pixels wide and up, the opening plays once per visit.
Anyone who has asked their device for less motion gets none of it. Without scripts, the page is fully visible and still.
What we check
- Every page is opened at 390 and 1440 pixels wide, and must show no sideways scroll and no errors in the browser console.
- Text contrast is at least 4.5 to 1.
- Every control can be reached by keyboard and shows a visible focus ring.
- Every link that stands on its own and every button is at least 44 pixels tall.
- Every image carries its real width and height. Apart from the logo and the first large picture or two on a page, every image loads lazily.
- Twenty-six marketing words are banned from the site, and the publish step stops if one appears.
- Running text has no straight quotation marks.
What the form keeps
The form sends what you type, with the time it was sent and your browser type. To stop automated abuse it also keeps a scrambled record of the connection: a count for the current hour and, for a free look, a marker for two weeks.
What you send is kept for twelve months, and the stored copy is then deleted automatically. The privacy page has the full account.
What this site does not have
It sets no cookies of its own and runs no analytics. There are no testimonials or client counts, because there are none yet. And there is no price list for builds, because every build is priced for the business it is for and agreed in writing before it starts.
The measurements on this page were taken on the dates shown.
